Geoffrey Makhubo
Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg
The city of Johannesburg has played a pioneering role in financing the climate transition. It was the first city in the world to issue a local green bond (USD 143 million) in 2013 and is currently preparing Africa’s first pooled green bond with municipalities in Gauteng Province. Its climate plan is integrated into all its policies and budgetary choices, including the fight against poverty and inequality. The city recently acquired a fleet of hybrid electric buses and plans to invest USD 1.8 billion in green infrastructure by 2030. As a result of its good management and creditworthiness, the city of Johannesburg has increased its financial autonomy and diversified its sources of funding by accessing the capital markets.
